The tradition of Madeira Island Fireworks dates back to the seventeenth century, marked by bonfires that were lit, illuminating and filling Madeiran homes with color and brightness. Later in the eighteenth century, the English community living on the island introduced the launch of rockets to mark the beginning of the New Year.

A century later, the banker Madeiran João José Rodrigues Leitão chose to recreate this tradition, and the wealthy families of the island began to compete with each other in the launch of rockets, promoting a spectacle of fireworks that spread to the higher areas of the city. At the time, the pyrotechnics were followed by celebrations in ballrooms.

Nowadays, the New Year’s Eve firework show lasts approximately eight minutes and is spread out over more than 30 burning fire stations located in the amphitheatre of Funchal, on the waterfront and down town area.

Madeira holds the Guinness World Record for the Largest Pyrotechnic Performance in the world. This record was achieved in 2006 and topped in 2010. The New Year’s Eve Fireworks celebration is the largest tourist attraction in the region.

Day 4

FRI DEC 27 • Porto-Coimbra-Obidos-Lisbon

Leave Porto and head to the mystical city of Coimbra.

Coimbra was the capital of Portugal during the Middle Ages, but it was the Renaissance that transformed the city into a place of knowledge, when Dom João III (1521-57) decided to move the University to the city on a definitive basis.

A center of learning, par excellence, the University of Coimbra was founded in 1290 and is one of the oldest in Europe and was classified a World Heritage site by UNESCO; this classification includes also the Uptown and Sofia Street.

Enjoy lunch in Coimbra before we continue to the medieval town of Óbidos. Prepare for a very traditional, succulent lunch, Portuguese-style! Be sure to let us know if you are not a meat eater.

The delightful town of Óbidos, with white houses adorned with bougainvillea and honeysuckle, was captured from the Moors by the first king of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques, in 1148. Denis of Portugal, son of Afonso III, later presented it to his wife, Queen Santa Isabel. From then until 1883, the town of Óbidos and the surrounding land was always the property of the Queens of Portugal.

Afterwards, drive to Lisbon and check in to Bairro Alto Hotel.

Day 5

SAT DEC 28 • Lisbon

After breakfast, set off for a half day of exploration of Lisbon.

We will visit Belém – the area of the Discoveries! Of all Lisbon, Belém most clearly evokes the era of the Discoveries and Portugal’s maritime expansion. It was from Belém that caravels (Portuguese sailing ships) would depart and arrive throughout the 15th and the 16th centuries. King Manuel I ordered the construction of the Monastery of Jerónimos (Hieronymos) and the Tower of Belém as symbols of the wealth and splendor of the times. Classified as World Heritage, these are among the very best examples of the “Manueline” architectural style: a Portuguese interpretation of the Gothic. No visit to Lisbon is complete without trying Belém Pastries. These are the famous cream cakes made from puff pastry filled with milk, cream, vanilla and… nobody quite knows what all. That is just how it is. The recipe for Belém Pastries is one of the best kept secrets in Portuguese gastronomy.

This evening we dine in the Chiado neighborhood, which is atypical of Lisbon and holds a surprise on every corner. Our restaurant is not so much an address as it is an entire universe devoted to creativity. This is truly something different.

Discover the display of sub-tropical fruits, vegetables, flowers and fish.

Afterwards, we will drive up to the Botanical Garden, where we walk through its cobbled pathways, admiring the flora variety and taking in the fabulous view over the town. To finish this tour in style, we will have a tasting of Madeira Wine in a Wine Cellar.

Day 8

TUES DEC 31 • Funchal

Leaving the hotel, we ascend to Pico dos Barcelos, a belvedere overlooking the city of Funchal. Continue to Eira do Serrado, from where we can overlook the Curral das Freiras – a settlement that grew up after the 16th century, when Madeira was attacked by the French pirates. It is located in a deep valley and has one of the island’s most spectacular landscapes.

A stop will be made at the Palheiro Gardens, home to spacious lawns and ponds boasting some of the rarest and most exotic plants in the world. Spend some time walking through a Levada (an aqueduct specific to Madeira), which was only completed in 1970 after an important project was commissioned by the Portuguese Government to provide hydroelectric power.

Afterwards, we stop to relax and enjoy refreshments at the Hortensia Tea House, featuring a delightful tropical garden and a great view over southeast Funchal Bay.

Return to the hotel. Prepare for a festive New Year’s dinner and celebration at the hotel to ring in 2020!
