Jeff and I found Indonesia to be lush and fascinating and both the Java portion and the Bali portion were fantastic in different ways.  I would like to report that we were in good company with travelers from every point in the globe, but as Americans we were welcomed with open arms in appreciation for our willingness to overlook past security issues.  In fact, the level of security we witnessed in all tourist venues gave us a sense of safety in excess that we feel in our neighborhood in Atlanta. United States Lifts Bali Travel Warning - May 28, 2008

The United States has lifted its Bali travel advisory, citing security improvements made by the Indonesian government. Other countries with travel advisories of their own are expected to follow suit, which will be a real boon to Bali tourism.

In 2000, the U.S. State Department issued a travel warning following several bombings in the country's capital, Jakarta. Things took an even darker turn when Bali was rocked by twin bombings in 2002, resulting in the death of more than 240 foreign tourists. Since the incidents, Bali has instituted increased security precautions that include sweeping cars for bombs and using metal detectors at hotels, shopping malls and other public buildings.
