Varanasi is one of the holiest cities of the Hindu religion. Considered to be one of the oldest cities in India, it is bisected by the sacred river Ganges. Called Ganga in India, the river is worshipped by devout Hindus and pilgrims who come to Varanasi to take a ritual dip in the holy Ganga year-round.

Day 12 Tuesday, October 21 -- Delhi - Varanasi extension
Breakfast at the hotel. Those taking the Varanasi extension will transfer to the airport for a flight to Varanasi. Transfer to the Taj Ganges Hotel. Lunch will be at the hotel. In the afternoon, tour the city of Varanasi ending at dusk at the Ganges River to witness the ancient Hindu ceremonial ritual called `Aarti’ conducted by the Hindu Brahmin priest class. In the evening, dinner at the hotel. Overnight at the Taj Ganges. (B/L/D)

Day 13 Wednesday, October 22 -- Varanasi Delhi
Tea, coffee and cookies are served in the lobby. Return to the river at sunrise for a boat excursion. The banks are alive with the multitude of worshippers who come to immerse themselves, facing the rising sun. Return to the hotel for breakfast. After breakfast, visit the buried city of Sarnath where Gautam, the Buddha, arrived after attaining `sambodhi’ (enlightenment) and preached his first sermon. After an early lunch, transfer to the airport for the flight to Delhi. Arrive Delhi and transfer to the Radisson Hotel New Delhi where day rooms will be reserved until your departure in the evening. Dinner is on your own. (B/L) Late night, transfer to the international airport for your flight back to USA. (Most flights will leave India just after midnight.)
